Most kids love playdough. I know my kids do. And they can spend a long time manipulating, pounding, smashing and rolling playdough. We’ve made our own playdough countless times. And quite recently, I decided to incorporate some alphabet learning with playdough by creating free printable alphabet playdough mats. This time around, we created Valentine Playdough Mats. These are Valentines themed playdough mats that still incorporate some learning. It’s an absolute play based learning activity where preschool kids can have fun without realizing they are learning.

If you haven’t made playdough yet, here’s our favorite recipe on how to make playdough.
Alternatively, my kids have been loving this new sensory material, which simulates playdough but creates less mess: Playfoam
The Free Printable Valentine Playdough Mats contain 5 pages:
The first page encourages kids to roll playdough to create a heart shape and the big and small letter H out of playdough. This also teaches letter H recognition and sound (H is for heart).
And the last page focuses on fine motor, finger dexterity and hand strengthening. Kids are encouraged to make playdough balls. Or if they are too young, to pinch off some playdough and put them on top of each small heart. The end result is for the kids to create a big heart out of their small playdough balls.
Playdough is an excellent sensory material for kids. It helps develop fine motor skills, finger dexterity, hand strengthening – excellent preparation for writing. It also improves kids’ focus and concentration. On top of that, these Valentine playdough mats expose preschool kids to some letters & their sounds, counting and number recognition as well.
