Running out of activities to do with your kids at home? Try this super easy homemade paint for kids. It makes use of only 3 ingredients, which you probably already have in your pantry.
All you need to make this easy homemade paint for kids are:
- Salt
- Food coloring
- Water
Simply mix all the ingredients together. For this activity, we used cotton buds as the ‘paint brush’. On proportions, we experimented and made 2 batches of this easy homemade paint. In the first batch, we put 2 teaspoons of salt, enough water to cover the salt and lots of food coloring. This created a very liquid mix of paint with strong, bold colors.
With this batch of homemade paint, these artworks were created:
For the second batch of homemade paint, we experimented on a thicker consistency and a lighter color. So we used 2 teaspoons of salt, 4 teaspoons of water and only a drop of food coloring. Because there was less water, the salt didn’t completely dissolve. The end result was a rough textured type of homemade paint, which in itself is a great sensory experience for kids. And the great thing about it is that it resulted in a different artwork effect from the previous batch of homemade paint. The artwork was textured and the colors were less uniform due to the salt absorbing some of the color.
We let the artworks dry out in the sun (or you can dry it out quickly with a blow dryer). The result were artworks that glistened at certain angles under the sun. The photos certainly do not do any justice, because it couldn’t capture the glistening effect of the salt. So go on and try this activity with your kids to see it for yourself.
